Valaciclovir belongs to a group of drugs called antivirals. It works by killing or stopping the growth of viruses called herpes simplex (HSV), varicella zoster (VZV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV).

It is effective in treating shingles, HSV infections of the skin and genital herpes, treat cold sores and prevent infections with CMV after organ transplantation.
